On the whole, Ground Zero is a very ordinary fare. Its biggest plus points are its controlled budget and its topicality in view of the terrorist attack at Pahalgam in Kashmir earlier this week. But a human drama about our country, which leaves the audience unconcerned and without empathy for the protagonist, can seldom have a chance to work at the ticket windows.

The difference with ‘Ground Zero’, which calls itself a ‘work of fiction based on real-life events’, are two-fold. First, it releases the same week of the Pahalgam tragedy, whose consequences will be felt for a long time to come. Second, it steers clear of the disturbing jingoism that has been part and parcel of such films, focussing instead on the tough life of the BSF jawans and other security forces in the conflict-stricken Kashmir valley. Hashmi does a good job of being Dubey, trying to tone down the dialoguing and making it sound conversational. But tighter would have been better.

Ground Zero, which puts Emraan Hashmi in uniform, has the same-old cocktail of hero and heroics while depicting an important military operation.He plays Border Security Force (BSF) commandant and Kirti Chakra awardee Narendra Nath Dhar Dubey, who led the 2003 operation to eliminate the terrorist Ghazi Baba in Kashmir. But this film cannot be viewed in isolation after what happened in Pahalgam.

Tejas Prabha Vijay Deoskar’s directorial is a no-nonsense thriller that hits the chord right from its first frame.
